Habitual — An Application to Improve Your Day

It was a normal Monday when I realized I was much more exhausted than usual. Sure, it was Monday but that was not the reason. Could it be that maybe my morning routine is setting me up for a tough day ahead? I had the realization that maybe it was time to think more about what I do before I start my day.

The idea for my application Habitual was born. The main reason for this application is to help users develop healthy habits that benefit the productiveness of their day. I wanted to help people create healthier habits that could help improve their day. As I started tracking my routines I realized that some helped to set me up for an easier day. I was

Now that I had the idea I thought that I could easily create the prototype. Little did I know this would be a much bigger effort than I anticipated and my design would change drastically throughout the process. The first thing I needed to do was to draw my prototype.

My first prototype was very rough however it was a great look into how a user may use this application. It got me to think in the shoes of a user trying to use this application. After examining my first prototype A LOT changed!

This capstone project was great in getting me to think more about how other people view what I created and how their opinion or usability may differ quite a bit. This led me to think not about how I would design something but rather how I could design something for someone using a product. This led me to my revise my prototype.

After receiving some user feedback I knew that I need to simplify how this application would work. I need to not only have the functionality built-in but more importantly, I needed to make sure that the usability was intuitive.

The capstone project was excellent in helping me slowly make improvements in my development plan come to life. It taught me to plan the changes and then to set dates to make them come to life.

I started getting closer to seeing a real application as the class move forward. I was able to see something that was not only looking better but was also easier for users to navigate. As the class progressed I was able to truly grasp the concept of an application is created.

While doing user testing I realized that some things I thought were necessary was not truly needed. One is the calendar function that is highlighted in my earlier prototype. I enjoyed the exercise of watching users use my application. It helped convey the expression that people had when navigating the application. This taught me more about their experience than they could explain at times! This led me to my final version. Which was…. still not finished but close.

The final impressions of my application were that it felt like an application you would find on the app store! Looking at how it started I never thought it would end up here. I am extremely thankful for what I have learned in this class and how I can use these skills to grow as a UX designer.
